General information
- Lab office: Thornton Building, Room 33, 1F
- John's office: Thornton Building, Room 36, 1F
We usually go to lunch together in Murray's at around noon.
Email and Slack
Generally, prefer the Slack over email to contact me, or to send messages to the whole group. If you've got a longer question feel free to use email of course, but I tend to be more responsive to slack messages!
To email everyone (most useful for others at EBI not in the group slack) you can use pim-group@ebi.ac.uk.
Our Slack is called Lees group under the EBI lists, or https://bacpop.slack.com.
Meeting me
I'm usually happy to chat if I'm in the office. If you want to arrange a specific additional time (particularly virtually) you can use calendly to do this: https://calendly.com/johnlees/30-min
Calendar
EBI uses google calendar, which you can access by logging into your EBI google account. You can also load this calendar into a personal google calendar, or link to iCal if you're on a Mac. Generally I find that it mostly all works well together, apart from with Outlook (.ics) which is a bit more clunky. You can still open these files and they'll get added to your calendar.
Group calendar
We have a group calendar: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/u/0?cid=Y19iODBiMzkxZWEwN2MyZDRlZjk2YzM3YzEzNDM1ZGY2ZmI1MjAzMWIyOTgyOGJhZjZiMjk4ZTBkMTVlNGIyZWMxQGdyb3VwLmNhbGVuZGFyLmdvb2dsZS5jb20
Booking meetings ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Book directly from google calendar. Just choose an available room from the drop down, and you should automatically get a booking and a zoom link.
To make this easier you can add the room calendars to your google calendar so that you can see all the availability in one place.
Lab meetings
In 2025, these are at 2-3:30pm on Thursdays in the Skylark Room (though may change, see the calendar invite). The zoom link is https://embl-org.zoom.us/j/93520870652?pwd=STdIMHBNQ2I3Q1pJVmF1VUVwelBMZz09
The lab meetings are managed by Leonie.
Keep an eye out on the #meetings channel for a schedule and changes. We start with announcements
then typically we'll do one of:
- Presentation of a project in progress.
- Practice presentation for a talk to a larger group.
- Journal club on a paper, presenting one figure each.
- Five minutes per paper, with 5-6 participants.
- Guest speaker talk.
Other talks and seminars ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Please try and go to these as much as possible:
- Research talks, Thursdays at 12-1pm term-time (free lunch!).
- Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS), occasional.
Go when you can/talk looks interesting:
- EBI seminars, Tuesdays 2-3pm.
- Sanger PaM seminars, every other Tuesday 2-3pm C3-02.
There are also lunchtime seminars run by the predocs.
If you would like to invite someone for the EBI seminar series, this is possible (and encouraged).
Research office
The research office (roffice@ebi.ac.uk) is at the end of our corridor. Our contact is Jenni Main (jenni@ebi.ac.uk), who can help with travel reimbursement, petty cash forms, or event organisation.
Visitors
Email reception if you are expecting a visitor, so that they can be registered on the system. When they arrive they first need to go to the main security reception, and then you need to meet them at the EBI reception (you'll get an email when they're on their way).
